The short version

Since 1 January 2026 crypto-asset service providers serving EU users collect each customer's tax residence and tax ID and report transactions and transfers every year. The 2026 data is reported and exchanged in 2027. Non-EU countries such as the UK and Switzerland follow through the OECD framework. Self-custody is not reported directly, but transfers to it are. Investors with undeclared gains should correct before the data arrives.

01 · In plain words

Your exchange now reports to your tax office

Until 2026 a tax office learned about crypto mainly from what the taxpayer declared. Under DAC8, crypto exchanges, brokers and other service providers that serve EU customers collect each customer's tax residence and tax identification number and report every year what was bought, sold, exchanged and transferred, with values in euros.

The data for 2026 is reported in 2027 and exchanged between EU tax authorities. Non-EU countries join through the OECD framework. For investors with undeclared gains or old holdings, the window for a voluntary correction is now.

Example

A Dutch resident has traded crypto since 2019 on an EU exchange and holds EUR 600,000 on it. Box 3 was declared only partly. We reconstruct the holdings on 1 January of each year from the exchange data, file corrections for the open years before the 2026 data is exchanged, and move part of the portfolio to a structure that fits his plans.

05 · FAQ

DAC8 crypto reporting: frequent questions

What is DAC8?

The eighth amendment to the EU Directive on Administrative Cooperation (Directive 2023/2226). From 1 January 2026 crypto-asset service providers serving EU users must collect their customers' identity and tax residence and report transactions each year to the tax authorities, which exchange the data with the customer's residence country.

When is the first report?

Data for 2026 is reported in 2027, by the end of September at the latest, and then exchanged between EU tax authorities.

Does DAC8 cover self-custody wallets?

Not directly: it covers reporting service providers. But transfers from an exchange to an external wallet are reported, so the tax authority sees that the assets left the platform.

What if I live outside the EU?

The OECD Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework (CARF), on which DAC8 is modelled, is being implemented by many non-EU countries, including the UK and Switzerland, with exchanges starting from 2027 and later for others such as the UAE. Platforms will report about you to your residence country.

Should I correct past years?

If gains or holdings were not declared, a voluntary correction before the data arrives is usually cheaper than an audit afterwards. Penalties and procedures differ per country.
